A steady stream of curious visitors… were amazed by this exhibit at the Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising.
(FIDM)–>Fashion Institute of Design and Merchandising… is located in downtown LA…
The school collects the previous year’s major movie costumes, (including those worn by 2018 Oscar nominees, )..and puts them in the spotlight!
These costumes wrangled in groups. The details stopped folks in their tracks… I liked watching people inch forward… narrowing their eyes… just to get a better perspective.
Sometimes… it seemed as though visitors…were under the spell of “Wonder Woman” and her magical lasso…
Details! Details! Just powerful! 👊🏽
What a privilege to see these costumes up close… and all the little things you may have missed watching the movie!
The display recently closed… but was free… and open to the public.
This year, the designs of more than 125 costumes were featured. Including creations from FIDM alumni.
An FIDM spokesman, was quoted as saying: “The designers “unsung heroes….working very hard…and quietly behind the scenes.
These talented forces create characters…that help tell the story.
I’d like to add… that costumes always leave a lasting impression!
Costumes set the tone on how the audience will receive characters… and connect with them.. during particular time periods… key events…
They can evoke certain emotions…and set a certain mood…
Fun! Carefree!Lighthearted… and bright!
You know… like the vivid fashion featured on “Girl’s trip”
…and the cute outfits on “Lady Bird”
….or eerie… and dark… dare I say creepy looks from “IT!”
But let’s not forget the ✨magical moments✨ either!
Its amazing to feel like you’re able to turn back the hands of time… and examine the fashions and style trends from the past.
Costumes that are replica’s from unforgettable figures… and moments in history.. wow!
Dazzling looks created by Ellen Mironjnick, for “The Greatest Showman, Twentieth Century Fox
For “The Shape of Water,” best costume nominee Luis Sequeira designed more humble-looking clothes…
Jacqueline Durran was nominated for the magical Disney film…”Beauty and the Beast”
She was also nominated for her World War II era costumes in “Darkest Hour.”
Nominee Consolata Boyle designed extraordinary costumes “extravagant” enough for a queen” for the film “Victoria and Abdul.”
In “Phantom Thread” several hundred yards of film were used for women’s costumes.
Fifty original wardrobe pieces were created for the film..
Phantom Thread… was a 2018 Academy Award Winner.. in Costume design!
Mark Bridges, Costume Designer, Focus Features
Costumes for add so much to movies, and it’s hard to believe an Academy Award for costume design wasn’t given until 20 years after the Oscars started….
As the cameras keep rolling over the years… Designs have gotten more.. and more creative!
These pieces from “Star Wars: The Last Jedi.. (Lucasfilm), are out of sight!
Michael Kaplan is Costume Designer..
To date… Costume design has become one of the most competitive categories!
A category I look forward to celebrating every year!
…. and “sew on..” and
I hope this pun “stitches up” this fashion blog for you… just right!
Can we get a round of applause for the unsung heroes… keeping things together behind the scenes… of film! 👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽👏🏽 #Thank-you!
